Subdomain, Addon Domains, Parked Domains : Set-up and Management

Many times I have read, bloggers suggest to buy a shared hosting account when purchasing a web hosting for our services. Why have you ever thought?

If you visit any web hosting service provider website, you must have observed the various things. Just take a look at the below screen and then I will tell you more in details about it.

If your business is small and you have no further planning to expand it. You can start with Starter or Advanced package, depends on the number of user visits your website.

But being into various services or business sectors and planning to have all the website under one shelter then you must opt for Business or Pro package.

Here I will tell you more about Business or Pro package because they tend to focus on more than one website and maintaining all your website in one package sounds difficult sometimes.

One you purchase Business or Pro package, you will be provided a single cPanel account and then you need to set up the various kinds of domains when planning to expand your business. There are mainly 3 different kinds of domain services available under domains category of your cPanel account.

Those are:

  • Subdomains ( The number of domains included under Business or Pro package doesn’t includes subdomains)
  • Addon Domains
  • Parked Domains

Let’s discuss each of these one-by-one.

  1. Subdomains : These domains are considered as your secondary domains which are already included in your domain account. There is no additional cost for Subdomains by any service provider. All you have to do is include your subdomain, upload the respective files and you are done.

For Example, let’s assume that you own your website www.business.com and now you want to set up your subdomain for footwear sections. So to set up a subdomain for your  www.business.com, you just need to make www.footwear.business.com.

How to set up a subdomain in cPanel :

I.                    Login to your cPanel account
II.                  Click on Subdomains

III.                Enter the subdomain name and select the Document root/ directory (If the directory has not been already created then cPanel will automatically create a new directory with the specified name in your public_html directory or you specified location ). In this example your footwear directory is under public_html/footwear.

IV.                Now just go to your file manager of cPanel, find the directory and upload your files under footwear directory to get the subdomain live.

That’s all for subdomains.

  2. Addon Domains : The Addon domains are the additional domain which your organization owns and hosts under the same web hosting account.

For example, let’s say your organization wants to hosts www.business.com and www.realestate.com domains under a single cPanel because you have unlimited bandwidth, unlimited website account. To do so, you need to set up you addon domains.

Follow the details provided below to set up your addon account :

i.                     Login to your cPanel account
ii.                   Click on Addon domains

iii.                  Enter the details in the respective fields

iv.                 Upload the files of your website i.e. www.realestate.com under public_html/realestate as mentioned above
v.                   Update your IP address under the domain account. Sometimes you purchase two different domain from two different service provider. Let’s say you purchase www.realestate.com from Bigrock and www.business.com from Hostgator but your hosting account is with Hostgator. To update the DNS server details, provide the IP address of www.business.com to Bigrock team or do it from the backend of Bigrock account, so that the IP mapping happens correctly.

Once your DNS details are updated, you can now check your website. Generally it takes 24-48 hours to update the DNS propagation to come into effect and your website get global access.

That’s all for Addon Domain.

 3.  Parked Domains: A parked domains are the additional domains which points to the same website. For example if you type www.business.com or www.business.org both the website opens the same content because they are pointing to the same server. You have just reserved the domain www.business.org for your business.

Follow the details provided below to set up your addon account :
I.        Login to your cPanel account
II.      Click on Parked domains

III.    Enter the new website name

IV.    Update DNS details of www.business.com  into  www.business.org domain registrar account.

That’s all folks.
